Getaway Trends 2014 | Styling Ankle Strap Sandals with Pastels & Metallics Pt. 1

Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

Grey winter days got you feeling blue? Pack your pastels, metallics & ankle strap sandals–then get away, at least for a weekend.
Okay, maybe a week…or even two!

There’s no need to wait for April to start sporting the Spring 2014 trends you find most appealing.
Get away, instead, and head somewhere sunny where your peach colored chiffon and blush blouses may flutter in the breeze; where rose gold and quiet corals dare to brighten sandy, nude neutrals. Buckle up those ankle strap sandals, and take your soles for a ride, but skip the heavy metal–light metallics do it right.

Escaping on a whim is easy if you pack light and keep your selections easy to mix and match–meaning when it comes to trying getaway trends, three is a magic number. No need to go overboard.
Our Blushing Beauty set is the perfect example of how to do this when styling ankle strap sandals with pastels and metallics: 3 of the top trends for Spring 2014.

You want to start building your getaway outfits with a flat shoe and a high heel.

A chic flat is essential because you can dress up your casual looks with ease, then pair them with your party dress when your toes can’t handle compromising style nor comfort.
In this set, we opted for the the pointed toe, Encino ankle strap sandal by Chinese Laundry in Soft Blush. (Also available in Black Blue Ink). We especially love Encino for its double ankle strap detail. This textured pointy toe flat features a thick ankle cuff, as well as a delicate ankle strap below that adds an extra touch of intrigue.

Of course, you’ll need a high heel for glamming up your dressier looks for a night on the town, or at the see-and-be-seen poolside brunch.
For this getaway guide to packing light, we went with the Lickety Split high wedge, ankle strap sandal by BC Footwear in Metallic Rose Gold Leather (Also available in Black Suede).

After you’ve picked your getaway sole mates, the rest is easy: pick a soothing pastel color that has your name written all over it and go with it.
Pick a blouse or two in similar shades that can be interchanged with shorts or a skirt that pairs just as well with your swim suit, too. Including one or two statements pieces with pretty prints or fun florals makes it easy to keep your other items basic enough to mix and match.

Caveat: No need to be matchy matchy with colors (check out our previous post on styling pastels)–just keep colors in the same family, and go for the color block technique.

In our next post, we will show you how to style this same trend, with an earthier twist–buckling up another set of ankle strap sandals (a high heel and a flat) while keeping up with the other Spring 2014 trends we’re currently crazy about: pastels and metallics!

Happy Travels!

Getaway Trends 2014 | Styling the Pastel Trend

Winter days got you feeling grey?
Slather on the sunscreen and dig up your swimsuits, sunny days made for stunner shades are a trip to the tropics away!

When packing for your tropical escape, break out the mints, light pinks and powdered blues–nothing soothes the sole quite like stylish shoes in pastel hues.

Inspired by the surreal softness of the pastel color palette, designers like Jason Wu, Burberry & Prabal Gurung lit up their Spring 2014 runways with versatile applications of under-saturated hues, kicking off the pastel trend.

Taking a cue from these fashion gurus, we’ve curated a pastel inspired getaway guide to packing light, so it’s easy to go from day to nightTo recreate what we imagine a pastel breeze could be, we chose minty green to complement peachy corals and pastel pinks.

Pastel Breeze, getaway trends, pastel trend, spring 2014, ootd, outfit of the day, day to night, tropical escape, packing light, dnafootwear, bcbgeneration shoes, sam edelman gigi flats, bcbgeneration zahara heels, t-strap sandal, thong sandals, beach wear, beach party, resort 2014, dnastyle, chiffon, leather sandals

We picked up a chiffon printed short in a dreamy green and pink floral, then paired them with coral elements and mint green accessories. The Gigi Flat T-Strap Sandal in Light Green by Sam Edelman pulls the casual outfit together and complements the blush party dress, once you’re ready to slip your soles out of the chic & strappy pointy toe Zahara high heel sandal by BCBGeneration. Of course, the sleek Zahara ankle strap stiletto sandal, shown in Warm Sand (also available in Black) pairs phenomenally well with the shorts and crop top, bringing a casual ensemble way up a notch, effortlessly.

Mixing and matching is the key to easy breezy, on trend styling. For more fashion advice on styling with pastels, check back in to the DNA Footwear blog for the next post in our getaway series about ankle strap flats

In the meantime, peruse our COLOR BLOCK mood board on Pinterest to feast your eyes on colorful worlds of lovely pastel.

 Happy travels, fashionistas!

Budget Friendly Fridays: Bow Toes

Bow Shoe Trend

For the prettiest toes around just add bows! Don’t let your toes be bored anymore, you can score one of these three great heels for under $150.

First up is the flower pop “Details”, a prim yet fun shoe. You can wear it to tea with grandma or with skinny jeans at the coffee shop.

The sky-high “Rosale”  is a stunner with its quirky bow, high shine, and stiletto heel. No one will miss you at a party and you’ll never lose your friends because the height boost means you’ll always be able to see what’s going on.

For a night on the town or just a day at the office, the oh-so-sweet “Spectacle”  will add sparkle to your day. These shoes are so flashy, which means you don’t even need to paint your toenails (although we do recommend it, nobody likes naked toes!).

All three shoes are available in two color options from DNA Footwear. Now, that’s a ladylike deal!

The Perfect Pair: Minnetonka

The perfect pair of minnetonka boots
Add some boho to your life with the perfect pair of fringed Minnetonka boots. From Minnetonka’s boots to their classic moccasins, the Minnetonkas we wear today are essentially the same as the first American shoe (with slightly more style). Even after all these years, the brand remains true to their original designs and are worn all over the world by people with differening styles and tastes.

Pair your Minnetonkas with knit shorts or tribal print leggings, a white tank or tee, a printed or fringed bag, and an assortment of feathered accessories. While they are not the most transitional boots for night attire, they are perfect for a day in the city, the country, or for camping in the woods (which I don’t know why you’d do unless you were attending a musical festival).

Since their inception in 1964, Minnetonka Moccasin has shaped the moccasins place in history — proving the cyclical nature of fashion.

How To: Budget Shoe Shop

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

When you come to DNA Footwear you can expect to not only get top quality shoes but also the best price possible. When shopping vast selections of shoes it is often difficult to find your favorite styles at a price that fits your budget (If you’re like me your taste doesn’t match my bank account balance).

How to shop for shoes on a budget:

1. Allot a “shoe budget” for yourself — this can be weekly, monthly, or yearly depending on your shoe addiction level. Put this money in your savings account or that shoe fund jar that’s collecting dust on your desk.
2. Create a schedule of shoe purchases based on the seasons. Say, you’ll need 3 pairs of boots come November then you may need to up your budget in November (boots are often pricey).
3. Moodboard It — Create a visual collage of styles and designers you fawn over, which will give you an idea of what fits your personal style best.
4. Research sample sale sites like Rue La La, Gilt Group, and Mintbox, bargain footwear companies like us (of course), and lower price-point brands such as Steve Madden, Minnetonka, Chinese Laundry, Chelsea Crew, Asics, Merrell, Keds, Converse, Vans, and more!
5. Keep your eyes peeled for coupon codes and giveaways (Hint Hint: We host 2 giveaways a month AND offer exclusive discounts on our Facebook).

When in doubt, make a wish list and beg your friends and family to contribute to your "shoe-aholic fund"!
