Designer Spotlight: Vanessa Mooney X DV by Dolce Vita

Monday, February 24th, 2014

Coveted globally by taste-makers and celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens, Megan Fox, Emma Roberts and Lily Allen,  the eclectic, hand-made designs  by acclaimed jewellery designer and Hollywood-rebel, Vanessa Mooney, celebrate the free spirited, unexpected beauty of the boho-chic aesthetic that delights the eyes of passerby and wearers alike.

The LA based designer’s often intricate necklaces, bracelets, rings and pretty things inspire us to let go of tomorrow and soulfully embrace the sensuality and fullness of today with fingers and toes, ankles and wrists, and now thanks to her collaboration with DV by Dolce Vita, you can draw that inspiration up from the soles.

Here, at DNA Footwear, we are so pleased to carry two of our favorite styles of shoes from the Vanessa Mooney X DV by Dolce Vita Spring 2014 capsule collection: Avina and Atara. The Avina is a leather thong sandal, with gold belly dancing charms and leather sole; the Atara–a double leather ankle strap gladiator sandal with silver pyramid and smooth spiked studs also, crafted with a leather sole.

The casual versatility of the Avina thong sandal, easily rises to the occasion of dressier style elements. Celebrating that versatility, we orchestrated a truce between the femininity of dreamy florals and punk mysticism by pairing the jade green colored Avina with a sleek, flowery pencil skirt and a tank top emblazoned with a sugar skull. A pale pink bomber jacket keeps the chill away and the cool in play–as pastel hues and bomber jackets are hot trends for Spring 2014.

The rocker-chic-goddess aesthetic of the Atara gladiator sandal has inspired us to pair the tough, edgy sandal with the simple sweetness of a few key accessories and an unassuming cross strap, lace sundress. To brighten up the look with an air of playful sophistication, we paired these basic elements with a funky, mood-boosting, orange floral blazer that complements Atara‘s fierce design; blue accents and statement pieces bring the look effortlessly together.

Getaway Trends 2014 | Styling Ankle Strap Sandals with Pastels & Metallics Pt. 2

Wednesday, January 29th, 2014

At DNA Footwear, we’ve been crazy about ankle strap sandals for a few weeks now.
Can you really blame us? We can hardly help it now that we have a parade of chic, strapped & cuffed new arrivals coming in for Spring. While it’s still too cold in New York City to pound the pavement in summery ankle strap sandals, a lush, tropical island is the perfect setting for sporting this coveted spring trend. Combined with creamy metallics, fresh florals, and magical mint, the only accessory ankle strap sandals truly need are sun kissed skin and a balmy breeze.

As promised in our previous post on styling ankle strap sandals with pastels and metallics, our Secret Garden set draws it’s inspiration from an earthier approach to incorporating pastels into our Spring ensembles.
Reminiscing of a garden by the sea, we brought together powdery turquoise with grounding peach florals and tan.

To play up the boho-chic vibe we chose DV by Dolce Vitawoven pointy toe Geno ankle strap sandal in Honey Leather. The sleek, color blocked Abby split wedge espadrille in Mint by French Connection plays nice for day or night, pairing perfectly with the floral purse & shorts, just as well as with the mint leather pencil skirt and strapless swimsuit.
Muted metallics bring the look together: a shimmering understated cream camisole glams up the floral short and heightens the appeal of the front slit leather skirt; the coppery, wide brim straw hat adds intrigue, playing up your mystique with glamorous functionality–shading you from the sun as well as prying eyes mesmerized by your entrancing glow.

Getaway Trends 2014 | Styling Ankle Strap Sandals with Pastels & Metallics Pt. 1

Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

Grey winter days got you feeling blue? Pack your pastels, metallics & ankle strap sandals–then get away, at least for a weekend.
Okay, maybe a week…or even two!

There’s no need to wait for April to start sporting the Spring 2014 trends you find most appealing.
Get away, instead, and head somewhere sunny where your peach colored chiffon and blush blouses may flutter in the breeze; where rose gold and quiet corals dare to brighten sandy, nude neutrals. Buckle up those ankle strap sandals, and take your soles for a ride, but skip the heavy metal–light metallics do it right.

Escaping on a whim is easy if you pack light and keep your selections easy to mix and match–meaning when it comes to trying getaway trends, three is a magic number. No need to go overboard.
Our Blushing Beauty set is the perfect example of how to do this when styling ankle strap sandals with pastels and metallics: 3 of the top trends for Spring 2014.

You want to start building your getaway outfits with a flat shoe and a high heel.

A chic flat is essential because you can dress up your casual looks with ease, then pair them with your party dress when your toes can’t handle compromising style nor comfort.
In this set, we opted for the the pointed toe, Encino ankle strap sandal by Chinese Laundry in Soft Blush. (Also available in Black Blue Ink). We especially love Encino for its double ankle strap detail. This textured pointy toe flat features a thick ankle cuff, as well as a delicate ankle strap below that adds an extra touch of intrigue.

Of course, you’ll need a high heel for glamming up your dressier looks for a night on the town, or at the see-and-be-seen poolside brunch.
For this getaway guide to packing light, we went with the Lickety Split high wedge, ankle strap sandal by BC Footwear in Metallic Rose Gold Leather (Also available in Black Suede).

After you’ve picked your getaway sole mates, the rest is easy: pick a soothing pastel color that has your name written all over it and go with it.
Pick a blouse or two in similar shades that can be interchanged with shorts or a skirt that pairs just as well with your swim suit, too. Including one or two statements pieces with pretty prints or fun florals makes it easy to keep your other items basic enough to mix and match.

Caveat: No need to be matchy matchy with colors (check out our previous post on styling pastels)–just keep colors in the same family, and go for the color block technique.

In our next post, we will show you how to style this same trend, with an earthier twist–buckling up another set of ankle strap sandals (a high heel and a flat) while keeping up with the other Spring 2014 trends we’re currently crazy about: pastels and metallics!

Happy Travels!
