Hot Trends: Aztec Accents and Native Nuances

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

Techno tribal meets natural beauty seems to be the way of the fashion warrior this 2012 spring/summer and as I start to plan my wardrobe for Coachella I am not opposed to this movement. The peaceful hues combined with clashing patterns has me at odds with my paycheck trying to determine which shoes and accessories should be accumulated from now ’til then. The time has come to retrograde our cosmos of a closet for a new age of Native American attire and accessories.

Trendy tribes around the globe have returned to their design roots during the Age of Aquarius. Pulling inspiration from our ancestors by way of South Western routes and South American regions, woven Native nuances and tribal accents are being incorporated by designers all over the fashionable lands.

Everything from shoes to belts and blankets, backpacks and apparel are being decorated with the indigenous markings adding depth to our excavation of modern artifacts. One brand familiar for their Navajo niche is Pendleton. Their Southwestern collaborations with multiple companies range from bags to dog beds and have become overwhelmingly popular with carriers such as Urban Outfitters.

South America’s archaic  influence is seen in a variety of motifs going into Spring with Aztecan zigzags  and jagged symbols reminiscent of Mayan pyramid steps. As modern brands contemporize ancient symbologies and heiroglyphics with a juxtaposition of earth tones and fluorescents, we  have woven shoes like the Joe’s Jeans Trixie Wedge, Chelsea Crews Samba Oxford and Freebird’s Cablo cowboy booties into our DNA.

Trend Tuesday: All Denim Everything

Vans, Converse and UGGS have got the blues…Blue Jeans that is and Lana Del Rey even has a song named after the classic and classy casual wear. With everything from hats to backpacks being accented with denim, many shoe brands have hopped on board.

Transitioning from Winter to Spring can be somewhat intimidating. With festival season arrived, SxSW is taking over Austin and Coachella is just along the horizon, proper denims will have you Rockin’ n Rollin’ or just takin’ a walk along the wild side. You can play dress up with funky chunks from the likes of Steve Madden, Jeffrey Campbell, Rachel Zoe, Report Signature (need I say more?)  or doll them down in festive flats from Seychelles, Yosi Samra or Gee WaWa.

Take the easy route and hide excess winter weight with high wasted acid wash denim shorts or revamp your closet with  a good ol’ trip to the craft store. Taking the vintage approach and cutting up old jeans or studding the seams will enliven a hibernating ensemble but a statement shoe will stick like glue!

WHATEVER you choose, casual denim wear must be accompanied with the right shoes. As this month’s must-have fabric its about time to revisit your closet and double check that you have sufficient footing for every occasion. Festivals or fiestas, damsels in denim are embracing rough and rugged and ready to ride.

Celebrity: Elizabeth and James Wishlist

Elizabeth and James Collection

It’s brands like these that make my job excruciatingly painful. The gorgeous elegance of textured, pattern heavy combinations mixed throughout the Elizabeth and James collection makes a girl want what she can’t have. Fusing  an uptown chic with downtown couture, colorful accents and masculine cuts, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have yet again released double trouble for my pocket book.

Vintage x Retro x  Modern, from shoes to accessories this collection turns the fashion conscious head spinning. Luxuriously modern in approach the twins have managed to capture classic elegance with contemporary cool. A bit pricey for the average consumer but each piece speaks loudly, so splurging every once in awhile with this brand will keep your closet up to date. Above are my SOME of my favorites and there is much more coming from the Spring collection. Included in DNA’s New Arrivals is a pair of the E-Clair Colorblock  High Heel Sandal.

Hot Trends: Color My Sole!

Steve Maddens Colorful Soles

The latest development in the shoe game is being kept on the low, literally. Just getting warmed up by Trendsetters and Go-Getters around the globe are the colorful soles that are being vivaciously supported by brands such as Steve Madden and Mark McNairy. Adding a subtly vibrant color base to neutral bodied basics, dress shoe designers are adding some soul to their soles, spicing up the oh-so boring business attire.

With electric blues and teals, pastel mints, peaches and yellows married against neutrals, these flats have me putting away my heels and lacing up in gem tones and sandstones. Embracing androgyny, the base movement has found a foothold  in both men and women’s wear and will be brightening up the office by mixing the prude professional with a colorful foundation.

Catch the glow from bottom to top this Spring in a pair of brightly based ballroom shoes or boots. Click here to check out my favorite tastemaker sporting Mark McNairy boots trimmed with Orange and Yellow soles and I absolutely heart the soles by Steve Madden pictured above.

Designer Spotlight: NewbarK

Monday, January 30th, 2012

newbarK

What gal doesn’t heart cute shoes? Designers and sisters Maryam and Marjan Malakpour literally “heart them” for their spring NewbarK collection.

As a stylist, I’m always looking for unique shoes for photoshoots, as well as fashionable and comfortable ones for my own busy feet. So, when I came across this fairly new shoe line from fellow stylists, it made sense that these two would transition into shoe design.

NewbarK is a luxury collection of handmade shoes and handbags, originally launched in 2009 by the Malakpour sisters. Crafted in an artisan factory in Los Angeles, NewbarK shoes and handbags exemplify a streamlined yet contrasting use of materials – leather, canvas, felt, suede and virtually no hardware, making these shoes chic, simple and modern.

You’ll heart these flats: they fold neatly into a small carrying pouch for the city girl on the go. With an aesthetic of Moroccan baboush meets Englishman’s leather slippers, they’re a sophisticated and stylish alternative to ballet flats. Think of them as the grown up version of your weekend shoe.

Trend Alert: Pretty Punk — Botanical Beauties

Monday, January 30th, 2012

floral

Gawking in awe at Spring prints, New Yorkers wonder when we’ll get the chance to brighten our wardrobe with botanical beauties. We won’t be able to live with ourselves come spring if we don’t find some way to incorporate florals into our wardrobe without looking like a 16-year old teenybopper with a propensity for Lisa Frank.

You have two options when it comes to florals: you can go the feminine route with flats or flatforms or you could add some edge to balance out the dainty dresses with combat boots. When it comes to accessorizing your florals play with prints but be careful because print on print can go terribly wrong (we don’t need you coming back crying to us because you made a fashion fail).

Footwear News: Halle Berry Launches Shoe Collection

Monday, January 30th, 2012

halle berry shoes

Apparently having a shoe collection is the new “IT” thing to do; it feels like every day we report that some celebrity or reality star wants an in with the fashion industry.  One such celebrity is Halle Berry, who is quickly becoming a woman of all trades. The actress slash Revlon spokeswoman teamed up with popular German retailer Deichmann Shoes to create her own line:  ’5th Avenue by Halle Berry’ collection.

Fitting for women her age (we mean that in the kindest way possible), the collection features fairly low heels and wedges, mixing comfort and style for the modern mom. Boasting 40 limited edition shoes, Berry is proud of the new baby in her life, her shoe line. In discussing her new endeavor she said,

“Shoes are a statement. They can be very sexy; they can say something about where you are in the day; they can say what your mood is; they give you a chance to accessorize. And I’m a girl that loves to change my shoes all the time. It’s an expression of who you are really. I’m a girl if I find a shoe that I really like I like to get them in all colours. I’m big on that.”

With the reasonable starting price of £29.99, budget savvy mothers are eagerly awaiting the UK launch in March.
