Men’s Style: It’s That Simple

Monday, October 31st, 2011

simple footwear

Simple recycled footwear is an exciting alternative. Normally green and ethical are never mentioned in the same breath as fashionable and stylish but with Simple footwear you can. Take a look at the Hi Sneaker in grey or the Tuba sneaker and the Carnival, Simple has managed to combine green living principles with stylish urban footwear. The 3 things I’ve learned about Simple is:

1. Simple is always seeking new ways to make shoes that are both attractive and practical, yet conform to the requirement for low-impact living. Since their inception in 1991 Simple has made a large impact with their sustainable footwear.

2. Simple reduced their packaging to the bare minimum; no hang tags, 100% post-consumer recycled foot forms and even biodegradable bags for their flip-flops.

3. Simple only uses recycled and sustainable materials: recycled carpet padding, bamboo, silk, plastic, hemp cotton, car tires, certified leather and suede, coconut, wool, recycled tubes, crepe (natural rubber), post-consumer recycled paper and cork.

It’s as Simple as 1, 2, 3.

Designer Spotlight: Yotam Solomon

Yotam Solomon

You can’t follow fashion industry news without hearing the name Yotam Solomon. This young and ever-so-endearing designer made his way into the fashion section of my heart (which is pretty much the entire organ) over a year ago and I’m delighted to introduce you to him today.

When I last spoke with Mr. Solomon, he was enthusiastically showing his Drug & DNA (yes, coincidentally it has our name in the title — one point Yotam) collection to an intimate crowd at his private residence on the Sunset Strip. The collection shed light on the prescription drug epidemic among youth — it was a call to attention for an increasing adolescent problem. The Drug & DNA collection was well-received not only by members of the blogging community but also by the highest on the fashion food chain.

Subsequently following his Drug & DNA collection, Solomon proved his dedication to eco-friendly fashion, partnering with DASANI, and Coca-Cola  for the Earth Day Plant Model Fashion Show at the Grove LA – only Solomon could turn foliage into fashion!

Last week, Solomon caught us up on his latest happenings, including the upcoming launch of a ‘Global Extreme’ collection and a Men’s footwear line. When discussing the ‘Global Extreme’ collection, the designer explained that there is a common misconception of global “warming” and that too carelessly is the world “playing with nature”. His eco-conscious collection will launch early next year and will incorporate different elements of nature’s forces in a subtle way. You’d think tacking a global problem would consume all of Solomon’s time but think again! He is releasing a Men’s footwear collection, including semi-oxfords, sandals, and “pumped up” high-tops, around the same time as the ‘Global Extreme’ collection. Does this young designer have any time for himself?!

Nope, the rest of his time is dedicated to mentoring and teaching his interns about the ins and outs of the fashion industry! This designer stops at nothing to design, teach, and empower.

Waste to Wearable: New Balance + Dasani

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

As part of New Balance’s effort to adopt more sustainable practices, newSKY represents an innovative approach to both material and shoe design. Since “a typical shoe has a lot of different types of materials,” the decision to use recycled fabric for the entire upper posed quite a challenge — one that New Balance was not afraid to tackle.

The material used for the upper of newSKY is called Eco-fi, a high-quality polyester fabric made out of 8 post-consumer plastic bottles. Eco-fi’s strength and durability make it an easy choice for car interiors and carpets but its other characteristics – such as comfort and breathability – make it an ideal fabric for footwear (Watch the transformation process HERE).

Since two million plastic bottles are used in the U.S. every ten minutes and 51 billion plastic bottles go into landfills annually, why not make this waste wearable?

Eco-Friendly Friday: Camper

Friday, September 30th, 2011

Camper is a family run business established by visionaries and pioneers in pursuit of a shared idea. Forming a foundation for success based on passion and dedication, the brand blends ethics and aesthetics. With the brand’s mediterranean identity comes deep-rooted cultural values dating back to 1975.

In 1877, Antonio Fluxà, a skilled cobbler, set sail for England to investigate new industrial manufacturing methods only to return and gather craftsmen from Inca (Mallorca), introduing them to machine manufacturing techniques. Inspired by culture, history, and technique Lorenzo Fluxà, Antonio’s grandson, created Camper in 1975.

In 1981, the first Camper store debuted in Barcelona and now, four generations later Camper thrives on design –an efficient tool for advancing in a competitive global market.

Eco-Friendly Footwear: Kalso Earth Shoes

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Anne Kalsø was born in the Faroe Islands off Denmark in 1905 and found a deep connection to the art of yoga. Her passion for the exercise meditation led her to study in Switzerland and eventually in Santos, Brazil. During her studies with the native Brazilians, she noticed her posture improving — a lightbulb of inspiration went off!

Returning to Denmark, Kalsø enlisted the help of a Portuguese shoe maker to begin what would become a 10-year process to design the original Kalso Shoe. Kalso began selling her shoes from a modest storefront in Copenhagen and soon the world was inquiring about her “healing” footwear. April 1st, 1970 would mark the much-heralded opening of the first United States distribution point for Kalso’s shoes. Coinciding with the first Earth Day, the name of the shoes – on the spot – was changed to “Kalso Earth Shoes”.
